Synopsis
For his final feature film, Portuguese master Manoel de Oliveira offers a foreboding fable of familial unrest. Gebo lives a quiet life in a European port city with his wife, Doroteia, and his daughter-in-law, Sofia. But the family is haunted by the absence of João, Gebo’s son and Sofia’s husband. Rumors are circulating of robberies and even darker dealings in neighboring ports. Is João responsible? One night, he arrives home and all is brought to light.
Featuring a cast of luminaries led by Michael Lonsdale, Claudia Cardinale and Jeanne Moreau, GEBO AND THE SHADOW is an atmospheric gem and an unmissable cinematic milestone.
Reviews
"[An] exquisite yet anguished spectacle, a grand piece of cinematic chamber music for a cast of mighty soloists."
- Richard Brody, The New Yorker
"Lonsdale is superb as the clan's resigned patriarch, and there are plum supporting roles for iconic performers Cardinale and Moreau. But it’s De Oliveira’s keen eye for evocative visuals and his mesmeric sense of narrative rhythm that make the deepest impressions." - Keith Uhlich, Time Out New York
