CINEMA GUILD ACQUIRES KAZIK RADWANSKI’S FESTIVAL FAVORITE MATT AND MARA

NEW YORK, NY (July 22, 2024) – Cinema Guild announced today the acquisition of U.S. distribution rights for Matt and Mara, directed by Kazik Radwanski and starring Deragh Campbell and Matt Johnson. The film premiered in the final edition of the Encounters section at the Berlin International Film Festival and was the closing night film at Jeonju International Film Festival in May. The film will open at IFC Center in New York on Sept 13 following its North American festival premiere.

When Mara (Campbell), a young creative writing professor, reunites with Matt (Johnson), a charismatic, free-spirited author from her past, a chance encounter threatens to spin her life in a thrilling new direction. Bonded by their history and shared interests, the two grow closer, while Mara contends with her strained marriage to an experimental musician. When her husband unexpectedly cancels plans to drive Mara to a conference out of town, Matt accompanies her instead and the pressure in their undefined relationship slowly builds.

In his fourth feature film, Canadian director Radwanski demonstrates his prodigious talent for drawing fully lived-in performances from his actors, crafting with them a modern-day romance filled with humor and heart in which every moment crackles with possibility. Reuniting on screen after Radwanski’s Anne at 13,000 ft, Campbell and Johnson build on their meet cute in the previous film and make a strong case for themselves as one of the most dynamic screen couples in contemporary cinema.

"Very few directors today are working with the assured instincts that Kaz brings to every film," said Cinema Guild President Peter Kelly. "His ongoing collaboration with Deragh Campbell and Matt Johnson is creating something truly magical and we can’t wait to share Matt and Mara with audiences far and wide."

The deal was negotiated by Peter Kelly of Cinema Guild with the film’s producers, Medium Density Fibreboard Films.

Cinema Guild also announced the acquisition of two previous features by Radwanski, Tower (2012) and How Heavy This Hammer (2015), which they’ll release on digital platforms later this year. Cinema Guild previously released Radwanski’s Anne at 13,000 ft.

A premier distributor of world cinema, independent films and documentaries, Cinema Guild’s upcoming releases include Hong Sangsoo’s A Traveler’s Needs, Matías Piñeiro’s You Burn Me and the 4K restoration of Shinji Somai’s Moving. Recent releases include Angela Schanelec’s Music and Hong’s In Our Day.
