Cinema Guild acquires Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Cannes critical hit The Wild Pear Tree

NEW YORK, NY- Cinema Guild announced today the acquisition of U.S. distribution rights to Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s The Wild Pear Tree, which was one of the best reviewed films of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival where it premiered in competition last month. Cinema Guild will release the film in theaters in early 2019.

The eighth feature film from Palme d’Or-winner Ceylan, The Wild Pear Tree follows Sinan (Aydin Doğu Demirkol), an aspiring writer who returns home after university hoping to scrape together enough money to publish his first novel. He wanders the town encountering old flames and obstinate gatekeepers and finds his youthful ambition increasingly at odds with the deferred dreams of his gambling-addict father (Murat Cemcir). As his own fantasies mingle with reality, Sinan grapples with the people and the place that have made him who he is.

Following in the great tradition of family dramas like Death of a Salesman and Long Day’s Journey Into Night, The Wild Pear Tree weaves an evocative tale of creative struggle and familial responsibility with inspired performances, sumptuous imagery and surprising bursts of humor. It’s one of Ceylan’s most personal works to date, a film as rich, layered and uncompromising as the novel its protagonist is working to publish.

The Wild Pear Tree will mark the second film of Ceylan’s released by the Cinema Guild. They also partnered on the Cannes Grand Prix-winning Once Upon a Time in Anatolia.

"We’re thrilled to be releasing another masterpiece by Nuri Bilge Ceylan," said Cinema Guild Director of Distribution Peter Kelly. "The Wild Pear Tree pulses with the vitality of a first feature, but could only have been made by someone with complete confidence in their craft. We can’t wait to share it with audiences in the U.S."

The deal was negotiated by Peter Kelly of Cinema Guild with Emilie Georges of Memento Films International.

Cinema Guild is a premier distributor of international cinema, independent films and documentaries, whose upcoming releases include RaMell Ross’ Hale County This Morning This Evening. Recent theatrical releases include Hong Sangsoo’s The Day After, Claire’s Camera and On the Beach at Night Alone as well as Jim McKay’s En el Séptimo Día and Valeska Grisebach’s Western.
