FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 9, 2019

Cinema Guild acquires Angela Schanelec's Berlin Prize winner I Was at Home, But...

NEW YORK, NY- Cinema Guild announced today the acquisition of U.S. distribution rights to I Was at Home, But..., written and directed by Angela Schanelec. The film won Schanelec the Silver Bear for Best Director when it premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival. It will open in U.S. theaters in early 2020. Schanelec’s eighth feature film as director, I Was at Home, But... will mark the first time one of her films has received a theatrical release in the U.S. Cinema Guild has played a significant role in introducing U.S. audiences to Schanelec’s Berlin School peers Christian Petzold (Yella, Transit), Maren Ade (Everyone Else, Toni Erdmann) and Valeska Grisebach (Longing, Western).

I Was at Home, But... tells the story of Astrid (Maren Eggert), a forty-something mother of two, struggling to regain her balance in the wake of her husband’s death. Her adolescent son Phillip (Jakob Lassalle) disappeared for a week and now that he has returned, he faces disciplinary action at school and his toe requires amputation. As new questions confront Astrid from every angle, even simple activities like buying a bicycle or engaging with a work of art, are fraught with unexpected challenges.

In her signature elliptical style and with a gentle sense of humor, Schanelec weaves together these narrative strands and more—a school production of Hamlet, a pair of teachers deciding whether to start a family, a donkey and a dog who share a home—to create an indelible picture of a small community grappling with fundamental questions of existence.

“It’s not often that we have the opportunity to introduce a director at the peak of her powers,” said Cinema Guild Director of Distribution Peter Kelly. “We hope I Was at Home But... will serve as the perfect invitation for audiences to get acquainted with Angela Schanelec’s incredible body of work.” The deal was negotiated by Peter Kelly of Cinema Guild with Anke Hahn of Deustche Kinemathek, Berlin.
