CINEMA GUILD ACQUIRES MISCHA RICHTER’S I AM A TOWN

NEW YORK, NY (February 22, 2021) - Cinema Guild announced today the acquisition of all U.S. distribution rights to Mischa Richter's I Am a Town. The debut feature by Richter, whose photograph of Amy Winehouse graced the cover of her album Back to Black before making its way into London's National Portrait Gallery, I Am a Town made its world premiere as part of Doc Fortnight at The Museum of Modern Art. Cinema Guild will release the film theatrically in 2021.

At the end of a remote peninsula, protected by a school of great white sharks, lies the remarkably diverse and free-spirited community of Provincetown, which has been clinging to a distinctly American-and yet increasingly rare-way of life. In his immersive documentary debut, Richter, whose artist family has been living in Provincetown for nearly a century, explores his home through shared moments and conversations with locals, pilgrims, outcasts, fishermen, drag queens and spirit guides in an exploration of what freedom and community mean in America today.

"It's rare to see a nonfiction debut as assured as Mischa has delivered with I Am a Town," said Cinema Guild President Peter Kelly, "Audiences will be entranced by this film and transported to a little piece of America that is hard to believe exists in 2021."

"I am incredibly thankful and excited to have Cinema Guild partner on this film," said Richter, "It is the perfect home for I Am a Town."

The film was produced by Richter, Emily Mortimer & Lizzie Nastro of King Bee Productions, Ryan Hawke of Under the Influence Productions, and Alexandra Shiva of Gidalya Pictures.

The deal was negotiated by Peter Kelly of Cinema Guild with Nastro and Hawke.

Mischa Richter was born in Windsor, England in 1971, but spent most of his childhood in Provincetown, MA. He studied art in London and started a career as an editorial photographer working for publications such as Vogue, Esquire, The New York Times Magazine, i-D, The Face, The Observer Magazine, Wallpaper and GQ. He is the founder and director of a non-profit publishing company called Land's End Press, which published his first book Saudade. Saudade is a series of photographs taken in Provincetown over a period of three years. He lives in Brooklyn and Provincetown.

Cinema Guild is a premier distributor of world cinema, independent films and documentaries, whose upcoming releases include Hong Sangsoo's The Woman Who Ran, Matías Piñeiro's Isabella and Kazik Radwanski's Anne at 13,000 ft.
