FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 26, 2010

THE CINEMA GUILD ACQUIRES MANOEL DE OLIVEIRA’S "THE STRANGE CASE OF ANGELICA," OFFICIAL SELECTION OF UN CERTAIN REGARD, 2010 CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

The Cinema Guild will release Oliveira’s previous film "Eccentricities of a Blonde-Haired Girl" on DVD and VOD on September 21, 2010

New York, NY —The Cinema Guild announced today the acquisition of U.S. distribution rights to Manoel de Oliveira’s “The Strange Case of Angelica,” a magical tale of a young photographer who falls madly in love with a woman he can never have, except in his dreams. The deal was negotiated by Ryan Krivoshey of The Cinema Guild with Yoann Ubermulhin of Pyramide International. "The Strange Case of Angelica" will open in theaters in early 2011.

Isaac works as a photographer while living alone in a boarding house in the tw. One night, he receives an urgent call from a wealthy family to come and take a photograph of a young bride, Angelica, who died mysteriously after her wedding. Arriving at their estate, Isaac gets his first glimpse of Angelica and is overwhelmed by her beauty. But when he looks through the lens of his camera, something strange happens – the young woman appears to come to life. From that moment on, Isaac is haunted by Angelica night and day.

"The Strange Case of Angelica" premiered in Un Certain Regard at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. It stars Ricardo Trêpa (who plays a young man suffering from a different kind of romantic affliction in "Eccentricities of a Blonde-Haired Girl") as Isaac and Pilar López de Ayala as Angelica.

"With its unlikely set-up, timeless setting and Chagall-esque dream sequences, it’s safe to say there’s never been a movie quite like 'The Strange Case of Angelica.' Yet, as American audiences will soon discover, it’s one of the most charming films they’ll ever see," commented Ryan Krivoshey. "We are thrilled to be working on another film from the great Manoel de Oliveria."

The Cinema Guild is a distributor of independent, foreign and documentary films, whose upcoming releases include Jacques Rivette’s "Around a Small Mountain," Jeff Malmberg’s SXSW winner "Marwencol" and Matt Porterfield’s "Putty Hill." Currently in theaters with Maren Ade’s "Everyone Else."
