The company was established by Philip and Mary-Ann Hobel, award-winning producers known for their work in documentaries and features, including the highly-acclaimed film Tender Mercies, nominated for five Academy Awards, (including "Best Picture of the Year"), and winner of Oscars for "Best Actor" by Robert Duvall and "Best Original Screenplay" by Horton Foote. The Cinema Guild is staffed by people with years of experience in distribution who are responsive to the needs of the producers whose work they distribute.

Hobel Productions, a division of The Cinema Guild, Inc. headed by Philip and Mary-Ann Hobel has been active for over twenty years in documentary and dramatic feature film production. Numbered among the many films produced by the Hobels is TENDER MERCIES directed by Bruce Beresford which was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture. Robert Duval won the award for Best Actor and Horton Foote won the award for Best Original Screenplay. The experience of the production group adds an important element to The Cinema Guild Inc.
